The Tamil Nadu government has given its in-principal approval for the Phase I extension of the Chennai Metro Rail project from Chennai Airport to Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam. The 15.46 km distance will cost ₹9,335 crore.
A Government Order from the Tamil Nadu Planning, Development and Special Incentives Department issued on April 17 also recommended the Detailed Project Report for project implementation sent to the Centre for its approval and funding under equity sharing basis.
The government also permitted CMRL’s Managing Director to proceed with land acquisition and to carry out utility shifting and other preparatory works in anticipation of approval of the Centre, the order said.
Sources said the project will be constructed in the elevated structure along the GST Road. Stations are likely to come up in 7-8 locations, including Pallavaram and Tambaram.
