TKIL Industries (formerly thyssenkrupp Industries India), has signed an agreement with Germany’s HOPPECKE Batterien GmbH & Co to develop battery systems for the rail sector in India.
The collaboration is aimed at delivering innovative and sustainable energy storage solutions for India’s growing rail transportation sector.
Under the agreement, TKIL Industries and HOPPECKE will jointly design, produce and integrate advanced battery systems across diverse rail applications, including metros, regional trains and locomotives.
The first joint project is slated for rollout in 2025.
With India expected to double its electric locomotive capacity by 2030, the collaboration comes at a pivotal time, said the company.
The number of metro-operational cities in India is projected to increase from 23 in FY25 to 31 in FY30, creating a demand for over 20,000 electric locomotives. Additionally, about 900 km of metro rail projects are underway, backed by an estimated investment of ₹600 crore, underscoring the massive opportunity in the rail battery ecosystem.
TKIL Industries will bring its expertise in engineering, manufacturing and project management, while HOPPECKE will contribute its decades of experience in developing and producing industrial energy storage solutions.
In the long term, this collaboration is expected to deepen further, including the development of localised service infrastructure across India.
Vivek Bhatia, Managing Director and CEO of TKIL Industries said HOPPECKE brings decades of technological expertise in energy storage solutions, while TKIL Industries specialises in delivering large-scale infrastructure across India.
The collaboration aims to play a pivotal role in accelerating the electrification of the Indian rail market—combining innovation, execution capability and a shared vision for a greener future, he said
Marc Zoellner, CEO, HOPPECKE Batterien GmbH & Co said the alliance is a significant step forward in delivering meaningful value to India’s railway sector through advanced battery systems.

The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
