The storage in India’s 161 key reservoirs dropped to below 30 per cent of the 182.444 billion cubic metres (BCM) capacity, with 70 per cent of them filled below 40 per cent, data from the Central Water Commission (CWC) showed.
CWC weekly bulletin on the storage status of the major reservoirs said the level this was was 53.578 BCM, or which is 29.37 per cent. This week, one reservoir (Panchet Hill in Jharkhand) was filled to the capacity. Last week no reservoir was full. The situation this year is better than normal (last 10 years) and last year.
With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stating that a low-pressure area has formed over the Arabian Sea and another similar weather pattern developing over the Bay of Bengal, the storage situation is expected to improve from now on.
The IMD has predicted that the south-west monsoon, which accounts for over 70 per cent of the country’s rainfall, will set in this week. The south-west monsoon is mainly responsible for the storage in a majority of the reservoirs. The north-east monsoon, which sets in during mid-October, accounts for the storage in some reservoirs, though.
The level in western and central regions was above 30 per cent, while it was below that in northern, eastern and southern regions. The storage in Tamil Nadu’s 9 reservoirs, Assam’s 2 dams, and Tripura’s lone reservoir was above 65 per cent.
In the 11 reservoirs of the northern region, the level improved marginally to 28.84 per cent this week of the 19.836 BCM capacity at 5.721 BCM. The storage in Punjab’s lone reservoir increased to 40 per cent, while it was 53 per cent and 16 per cent, respectively, in Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.
The level in the 27 reservoirs of the eastern region was 25.29 per cent of 5.538 BCM of the 21.724 BCM capacity. Apart from Assam and Tripura, the level in Jharkhand and Meghalaya was over 50 per cent.
In the western region, the level in the 50 reservoirs was 31.42 per cent of the 37.357 capacity at 11.737 BCM. The storage in Maharashtra was 26 per cent but in Goa and Gujarat, it was above 30 per cent.
The 28 reservoirs of the Central region were filled to 30.88 per cent of 15.854 BCM of the 48.588 BCM capacity. The storage in Madhya Pradesh was down at 37 per cent, while in Uttar Pradesh it was 20 per cent. In Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh, it was 16 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively.
In the southern zone, the storage in the 45 reservoirs was 29.37 per cent of the 54.939 BCM capacity at 14.727. The level in Kerala was 27 per cent and 28 per cent in Telangana. In Andhra and Karnataka, it was below 25 per cent.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
