SEA asks govt to reinstate standard pack sizes for edible oils

The Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) has asked the government to reinstate standard pack sizes for edible oils and similar commodities.

In a memorandum submitted to the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Sanjeev Asthana, SEA President, said that with the omission of the Second Schedule under the Packaged Commodities (Amendment) Rules, 2022, the mandate for standardized pack sizes has been removed. This has led to a proliferation of non-standard oil packs — 800 g, 810 g, 850 g, 870 g, etc — resulting in consumer confusion and distorted price comparisons.

Packs with marginally different quantities often appear similar, misleading consumers and pushing industry players into unhealthy competition based on slight grammage variations rather than value, he said.

Pricing opacity

On confusion among consumers, he said with several near-identical pack sizes, customers struggle to make informed choices, especially since label details are often overlooked and USP alone doesn’t clearly highlight value differences.

Lack of standardization leads to pricing opacity, discourages like-to-like comparisons, and undermines trust, particularly since oils are commonly sold below MRP, he said.

Standardizing edible oil packaging by weight (not volume) is essential to ensure price transparency, protect consumer interests, maintain market integrity, and create a level-playing field for industry players, he said.

“We respectfully urge the government to reinstate standard pack sizes for edible oils and similar commodities as per the original Second Schedule of the LM (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 — excluding small packs meant for lower-income consumers,” he said in the memorandum.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
