Pineapple prices have plunged 50 per cent from a year ago as heavy summer rains in the growing regions and rising demand for mangoes lead to a glut in the market in Kerala.
Pineapple prices have touched ₹32 for green and ₹41 for ripe varieties in the wholesale markets as of Monday , said Baby John, president of the Pineapple Growers Association Keralam.
Normally, pineapple would fetch good prices during March and April with prices ruling above ₹50 per kg. However, the early showers this season beginning March have increased production by around 30 per cent, resulting in the price crash. Currently, the production is around 1600 tonnes per day and it is expected to touch six lakh tonnes by the end of the current financial year, he said.
The rising demand for the fruit in the upcountry markets due to sultry weather conditions offer some relief, enabling the traders to move sufficient quantities to New Delhi, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat to cater to these markets.
Moreover, the traders are pinning their hopes on the commencement of the wedding season in New Delhi by next month which would boost the demand further. Pineapple is an integral part in many marriage functions in North India. Of late, pineapple as a fruit is getting wider consumer acceptance across the markets thanks to the increased awareness of its quality and absence of pesticide residue, he said.
The traders expect the prices to rebound by the beginning of monsoon in June as the demand for mangoes wane, he added.
