National level training on cocoa cultivation begins at Kerala Agri varsity 


Aimed at strengthening the Indian cocoa sector through knowledge exchange, skill development and value-chain integration, a national level training programme on cocoa has commenced at Kerala Agricultural University. 

The objective of the 3-day programme is to equip the participants with updated knowledge and practices in cocoa cultivation, value addition and marketing.

Officials from the State Agricultural Departments, State Horticulture Mission, Central Research Institutes and State Agricultural Universities of different States of India such as Nagaland, Meghalaya, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, etc are participating in the programme.

The training programme was organised by the Cocoa Research Centre (CRC) of Kerala Agricultural University and the Directorate of Cashew-nut and Cocoa Development (DCCD).

In his inaugural address, Jacob John, Director of Extension, KAU emphasised the need for a system-led approach in managing cocoa, especially when cultivated as an intercrop in plantations such as coconut and areca nut. He called for integrated efforts in research, extension and farmer engagement to make cocoa cultivation more sustainable and profitable.

K.N. Anith, Director of Research, KAU highlighted the significance of research-led innovations in cocoa farming. Femina, Director of DCCD underscored India’s potential to meet the growing demand for cocoa in the food and confectionery industry.

Minimol J.S., Professor and Head, Cocoa Research Centre also spoke.

Experts from KAU, CPCRI and industry representatives from Mondelez India, Pristine Cocoa and CAMPCO participated.
