Kerala Dairy Farmers’ Association is going ahead with its strike plan on May 16 demanding revision of milk procurement price to ₹70.
Currently, farmers are getting only ₹43 for the milk procured by cooperative societies whereas the production cost of milk has gone up to touch ₹65 per litre. The emerging situation has facilitated large number farmers to leave the dairy sector, forcing several dairy societies to close down due to lower procurement of milk, said Biju Vattamukulel, association president.
The association has already submitted a memorandum to the chairman of Milma, Ernakulam Regional Union Chairman seeking to enhance the procurement price of milk, he said.
Voicing concern over the declining milk production in the State, the association highlighted various issues such as rising fodder prices, increase in workers’ wages, rising cost of cultivating grass and the damaging of grass due to climate change; increase in the cost of veterinary services, hike in power and water tariff and so on.
They also cited the declining number of cows in Kerala by 37 per cent since the latest census in 2019, forcing the state to depend on other neighbouring states for milk. The high cost of milk production has made dairying in Kerala uneconomic and unattractive. The government should take steps to ensure that the dairy farmer gets at least ₹70 from the milk society to achieve self-sufficiency in milk production.
The demand for milk in the state is expected to rise over the next decade. A study by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) said that the demand for milk would touch 35.2 lakh tonne in 2030. The surging demand augurs well for raising milk production by at least 50 per cent in 2030, the association said.
