The Allahabad High Court Bar Association’s indefinite strike continued Wednesday in protest against the proposed transfer of Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma, who is under investigation following the discovery of a large amount of cash at his residence.
Meanwhile, the Oudh Bar Association (OBA) of the Lucknow bench urged the Centre to reject the Supreme Court Collegium’s transfer recommendation. It also called for impeachment proceedings against Justice Varma to safeguard public trust in the judiciary.
Lawyers from the Allahabad High Court Bar Association have been protesting at gate number 3 of the high court bench in Allahabad. Their opposition intensified after the Supreme Court Collegium reaffirmed its recommendation to transfer Justice Varma, prompting them to declare an indefinite strike from Tuesday.
The recommendation, initially proposed by the SC Collegium, was officially disclosed in a resolution published on Monday.
Justice Varma came under scrutiny after fire officials, responding to a late-night blaze at his Lutyens’ Delhi residence on March 14, reportedly discovered a significant sum of cash.
Following the incident, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, and the Delhi High Court took swift action, including withdrawing Justice Varma’s judicial responsibilities.
Justice Varma has denied any knowledge of the cash and dismissed allegations as a conspiracy aimed at framing and defaming him.
Justice Varma, who began practicing law in 1992, was appointed as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2014 and became a permanent judge in 2016. He later joined the Delhi High Court in 2021.
