ISMA welcome hike in FRP, seeks hike in sugar minimum selling price

ISMA, the sugar industry body of private sector (not cooperative) while appreciating the government’s decision to raise the sugarcane price by 4 per cent, has demanded the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) of sugar be increased. It has also sought hike in ethanol prices at which oil marketing companies buy the bio fuel from mills.

Pointing out that the increase in FRP also raises the cost of raw material for mills, ISMA said the selling price of sugar and ethanol procurement prices should be adjusted proportionately to allow mills to absorb these increased costs without financial strain.

“This progressive and farmer-friendly decision reflects the Government’s continued commitment to the welfare of India’s sugarcane farmers and is expected to result in a substantial increase in their income. The revised FRP is projected to enhance the earnings of approximately 5.5 crore sugarcane farmers by over ₹20,000 crore, taking the total payable amount to around ₹1.2 lakh crore in the upcoming sugar season,” ISMA said in a statement.

‘Beef up agri economy’

The decision will not only support farmer livelihoods but also strengthen the overall agricultural economy, particularly in rural regions where sugarcane farming forms a major source of income, it said. “We commend the Government for its proactive approach and responsiveness to the needs of the farming community,” ISMA said.

However, the industry body also said that there is a need for alignment of the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) of sugar and ethanol procurement prices with the revised FRP of sugarcane. “Such alignment is essential to maintain financial sustainability across the value chain—from farmers to sugar mills,” it said.

This policy alignment would enable sugar mills to improve their cash flows and liquidity, thereby ensuring that farmers receive timely dues, it said adding such a step would also encourage continued investment in ethanol production, which supports India’s clean energy goals and reduces dependency on fossil fuels.

“We are confident that the Government will consider this important issue with the same sensitivity and foresight it has shown in increasing the FRP, thereby supporting both the farming community and the sugar industry in a balanced and sustainable manner, as always,” it said.
