The sowing under summer crops, which will end by May, has reached 60.22 lakh hectares (lh) as of April 4, which is 15 per cent more than 52.4 lh reported in the year-ago period. The zaid season sowing is progressing well, the government said, and added that it is confident that the normal area will be covered this year by end of the season.
Except groundnut and bajra (millets), acreage of all other crops such as paddy, maize and moong is higher from last year’s corresponding area, data show. The current coverage is also more than 84 per cent of the normal area of 71.34 lh in the season. Zaid crop is grown before kharif sowing and after rabi harvest.
According to the weekly update released by the Agriculture Ministry, paddy sowing was up 17 per cent at 31.98 lh while nutri/coarse cereals area was up by 10.7 per cent at 9.86 lh. Among the nutri/coarse cereals, maize area is up 21.2 per cent at 6.22 lh (5.13 lh), while that of jowar is much higher at 0.31 lh from 0.17 lh and bajra lower 9.5 per cent at 3.15 lh.
The area under summer pulses is nearly 26 per cent higher at 11.04 lh, thanks to an increase in the coverage of greengram (moong) and blackgram (urad). Moong crop sowing was up by 24.7 per cent at 8.34 lh , while urad coverage was reported at 2.52 lh — up 32 per cent from 1.91 lh. The key growers of summer pulses are Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
Cultivated on a normal area of 21.65 lh, summer pulses play a key role in augmenting availability, particularly whenever there is a drop in pulses production during kharif and rabi seasons.
However, oilseeds area is almost flat at 7.35 lh ( 7.39 lh). Groundnut acreage has dropped 4 per cent to 2.96 lh, but sesamum is 23 per cent up at 3.97 lh and sunflower at 0.36 lh from 0.28 lh.
Meanwhile, the cumulative rainfall in pre-monsoon season between March 1 and April 8 is 32 per cent below normal on pan-India basis. While the North-West region is deficient by 50 per cent, compared to the long period average, East and North-East India reported 52 per cent lower than average precipitation and the central region has received 18 per cent less than average rainfall so far. South peninsula is the only region where the rainfall is 93 per cent above normal, India Meteorological Department data show.
According to the Central Water Commission data, water storage in India’s 161 major reservoirs dropped below 40 per cent to 72.91 billion cubic metres (BCM) last week out of of the capacity of 182.375 BCM. It is still higher than last year and normal (last 10 years) levels. Barring the central region, the level in the rest of the country was below 40 per cent of the capacity.
