The Indian government has reiterated that it will procure 100 per cent of the tur (arhar or pigeonpeas) produced by farmers at the minimum support price (MSP) of ₹7,550 a quintal. The reiteration comes as the Centre extended the procurement timeline in Andhra Pradesh by a month for the pulse crop.
In a statement, the Agriculture Ministry said the procurement at MSP through National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (Nafed) and National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India Ltd (NCCF) was in progress in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Telangana. A total quantity of 3.92 lakh tonnes of tur has been procured in these States, benefitting over 2.56 lakh farmers.
Tur procurement is also being done from pre-registered farmers on the e-Samridhi portal of Nafed and eSamyukti portal of NCCF. The government is committed to taking up 100 per cent procurement of tur at MSP offered by farmers through Nafed and NCCF.
To reduce the dependence on imports, the government has approved the procurement of tur, urad and masur under the price support scheme (PSS) equivalent to 100 per cent of the production of the State for the procurement year 2024-25. In Budget 2025, it was announced that 100 per cent of tur, urad, and masur production in the State will be procured by central nodal agencies — Nafed and NCCF — until 2028-29, aiming for self-sufficiency in pulses.
Accordingly, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved the procurement of 13.22 lakh tonnes of tur for kharif 2024-25. The minister has also approved the extension of the procurement period in Andhra Pradesh by 30 days beyond 90 days upto May 22 in the interest of farmers, the statement said.
Tur prices are ruling below the MSP across all producing States. The modal price (the rate at which most trades take place) across various mandis is in the range of ₹6,200-7,000 per quintal. Despite a lower crop, higher imports are weighing on the tur prices. The government has allowed the duty free imports of tur till March 31, 2026.
In the global market, Myanmar quoted tur (lemon type) prices at $825 a tonne (cost and freight) last week for delivery in May. Though prices dropped by $5 last week, overall they are up one per cent in the past month. According to the Myanmar Pulses, Beans, Maize and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association, currently tur is being offered at $750-760 a tonne f.o.b. for the same variety.
Per the second advance estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture, the production of tur, a kharif season crop, is projected to be 3.51 million tonnes (mt) against 3.42 mt a year ago. The trade expects at least one mt of tur to be imported this year, while the consumption is estimatred at 3.81 mt. The ending stocks this year are estimated to be 0.31 mt compared with 0.28 last year.
Though imports are putting pressure on the prices of pulses such as tur, the Centre is trying to ensure MSP for growers through its PSS procurement. So far, Nafed has procured over four lakh tonnes of pulses, including tur.
