To bolster the naval fighter aviation arm, India on Monday inked an inter-governmental agreement (IGA) with France to procure 26 Rafale-Marine aircraft for the Indian Navy in a deal estimated to be worth around ₹63,000 crore.

The deal follows the approval given by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this month, for the procurement of the naval fighter jet.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the delivery of the “state-of-the-art” fighter jet would be completed by 2030, with the crew undergoing training in France and India.

The aircraft carrier-operated fighter jet is regarded as one of the best in the world, capable of carrying out multi-role missions. The Rafale-Marine is expected to be deployed on INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya aircraft carriers, thereby significantly enhancing the Navy’s strength in the Indo-Pacific region.

As per MoD, under the IGA provisions, 22 single-seater and four twin-seater versions of the naval fighter jet will be procured. Currently, the Navy fields the MiG-29 K fighter jets.

Besides, the IGA includes provisions for training, simulators, associated equipment, weapons, and performance-based logistics.

“It also includes additional equipment for the existing Rafale fleet of the Indian Air Force (IAF),” the MoD said in a statement.

‘Transfer of Technology’

Furthermore, the agreement provides for ‘Transfer of Technology’ for integration of indigenous weapons in India.

“It also includes setting up a production facility for the Rafale fuselage as well as maintenance, repair, and overhaul facilities for aircraft engines, sensors, and weapons in India,” the statement read.

“The deal is expected to generate thousands of jobs and revenue for a large number of micro, small, and medium enterprises in setting up production and running of these facilities.”

In addition, one of the key advantages of the new jet is the commonality it has with the Rafale aircraft being operated by the IAF. At present, the IAF operates 36 Rafale jets.

“Its procurement will substantially enhance joint operational capability, besides optimising training and logistics for the aircraft for both Navy and IAF. The induction would lead to the addition of a potent force multiplier to the Navy’s aircraft carriers, substantially boosting the nation’s air power at sea.”
