The move for better monitoring of private PF trusts comes following some reports of misdeed noticed by Minister for Labour and Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has decided to carry out audits of private trusts that manage provident funds of employees if they face complaints of irregularities and mismanagement.
The move for better monitoring of private PF trusts comes following some reports of misdeed noticed by Minister for Labour and Employment, Mansukh Mandaviya, said Ministry sources.
Opaque functioning of private PF trusts have also been flagged at a time when the Ministry is trying to bring in reform for ease of doing business and ensuring transparency in the functioning of the EPFO.
There are 1,550 private PF trusts, having over 82 lakh subscribers, which were granted exemption by the EPFO to operate independently.
The EPFO, meanwhile, has introduced use of face authentication for Universal Account Number (UAN) allotment, marking a significant step towards contactless, secure, and fully digital service delivery for crores of members, Mansukh Mandaviya said on Tuesday.
All the subscribers have to do is to self authenticate their faces at the government’s governance mobile app, Umang for UAN allotment, Mandaviya informed.
Later, the EPFO will also be promoting digital life certificate through Jeevan Pramaan (biometric-enabled digital service) using the face authentication technology by collaborating with youth volunteers from MY Bharat portal to provide services to pensioners at their doorstep.
The Ministry got rid of the time-consuming and complicated existing process as the official data suggested that in FY25, 1,26,56,127 UANs were allotted by the EPFO. However, only 44,68,236 UANs, (35.30 per cent), were activated by the members during the same FY, informed the minister.
The UANs were mainly generated by employers by submitting data of employee member to the EPFO.
Though this data is validated using Aadhaar data, many errors were made in filling columns such as father’s name or mobile number etc, Mandaviya stated.
Due to these errors many employees had to update their data while submitting claims or for other benefits, he said.
In most cases, mobile number of member was not given or wrongly mentioned by the employer due to which EPFO could not contact or reach out to member if required, Mandaviya said.
In some cases, the UAN was even not given to the employee by the employer.
To add to this, UAN activation through Aadhaar OTP validation on EPFO Member portal was a separate process to be completed by the member causing confusion, the Ministry said.
Under the revised process, employee can directly generate UAN using Aadhaar Face Authentication Technology (FAT) using the Umang app. The facility can also be availed by an employer for generating the UAN for new employees.
The existing members, who already have a UAN but have not yet activated, can now easily activate it through the app.

Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
