In a tit-for-tat reflecting worsening of ties between the two neighbours, Bangladesh has cancelled ₹179.75 crore worth contract with Kolkotta-based shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) for manufacturing of an ocean-going tug for its navy.
The GRSE officially accepted that on Thursday but stated that it was not any setback to their fiscal health. It’s on “anticipated lines”, the order for an ocean-going tug for Bangladesh stands cancelled based on “mutual discussions” between us, the GRSE said.
The ocean-going tug is a specialised vessel meant for long-distance towing and salvage operations in open waters.
“This order though would not have impact on GRSE’s finances as the order is worth only US$ 21 million (approximately ₹179.75 crore) and would have contributed a mere 0.8% to GRSE’s existing order book of ₹22,680.75 crore as on March 31, 2025,” a statement issued by the state-owned shipyard read.
The diplomatic and security relations between the two countries nosedived post former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina landed in India after she fled her country on August 5, 2024.
This is the latest of the measure Bangladesh took to possibly India withdrawing transhipment facility for exports to third countries.
Now, Bangladesh is openly relying on China and Pakistan for its defence and security needs.
Meanwhile, the GRSE announced that it has emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) for the construction of five ‘Next Generation Corvettes’ (NGC) for the Indian Navy — a move, it stated, was possible due to “business acumen and proficiency in design, production & financial management.”
The GRSE said it will be awarded the contract to build five Next Generation Corvettes at an estimated cost of approx. ₹25,000 crore.
These next-generation Corvettes shall be capable of fulfilling the roles of offensive SSM attack, anti-missile defence, surface action groups for maritime strikes, ASW and many other maritime operations.
The warship will also incorporate green warship design features, energy efficient & environment friendly technologies.
The company is already building four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPV) for the Navy, apart from three Advanced Guided Missile Frigates. It has delivered one of the eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts to Indian Navy and two of four Survey Vessels (Large).
In another development, GRSE successfully completed the sea acceptance firing trials of the indigenous Naval Surface Gun NSG (30mm) with pinpoint accuracy using a sophisticated indigenous Electro Optical Fire Control System.
The sea trials conducted onboard one of the GRSE designed and constructed Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) signals a strategic shift within the company towards being a capable weapon manufacturing company in addition to being shipbuilders to the nation.
