Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Richard Marles, will travel to India as part of his four-day South and Southeast Asia tour starting from June 2.
Richard Marles’ visit to India, said the Australian High Commission in a statement, coincides “with the fifth anniversary of Australia and India’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which underpins our relationship and shared vision for the Indian Ocean.”
Both the friendly nations are expected to renew and strengthen the Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation this year, which would reflect ambition in both countries’ elevated defence and security partnership and strategic convergence.
This is what Prime Ministers of the two countries had said at the second India-Australia Annual Summit on the sidelines of the Group of 20 (G20) Summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 19, 2024.
The Australian Deputy PM is expected to meet defence minister Rajnath Singh and other top brass in the Modi government for securing long term vision of defence and security collaboration.
Marles’ visit also assumes importance given that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned on Saturday at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore about China’s real threat in the Indo-Pacific region and urged allies to invest more in defence to secure themselves.
“Australia values our relationships with neighbours in the Indo-Pacific. Our deepening cooperation is at the heart of Australia’s approach to ensure the Indo-Pacific remains open, inclusive and resilient,” he said.
“I look forward to meeting leaders and welcome productive discussions on how we can work together to shape a peaceful, secure, and prosperous region that is respectful of sovereignty.”
The Deputy Prime Minister will meet leaders and counterparts in the Maldives, Sri Lanka, India and Indonesia as part of the government’s commitment to deepening diplomatic and defence partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, read a statement.
During his visit to Maldives and Sri Lanka, the Deputy Prime Minister will discuss ongoing Australian support for both nations’ sovereign capability development.
In Indonesia, the Deputy Prime Minister will meet his counterpart to reaffirm the country’s commitment to a peaceful, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
