India’s sugar output may improve as 16 mills in UP to continue cane crushing until May

Around 22 factories, including 16 mills in western region, are operational in Uttar Pradesh, creating hope for some more sugar production this year as overall output has reached 25.5 million tonnes (mt), said the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) without disclosing the number during the year-ago period.

As reported by businessline, sugar production from October 1, 2024 to April 15, 2025 dropped 18.42 per cent to 25.43 mt on year, according to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF).

There are 38 factories operating currently, while 496 have ended operations across the country, so far since October 1, 2024, ISMA said in a statement. In Maharashtra, the No 2 biggest sugar producer, the lone sugar mill in operation now in Pune district is expected to close crushing before mid-May.

Recovery up

“Owing to the improved yield of plant cane, cane availability has improved in UP and these 22 factories are expected to remain in operational upto late April 2025 or first week of May. Moreover, sugar recovery has also shown improvement in the second half of the season (from April 1), resulting in better output of sugar,” ISMA said.

Some factories in south Karnataka are expected to restart operations during the special season beginning June/July, it said adding Karnataka and Tamil Nadu collectively contribute around 0.4-0.5 mt of sugar production in the special season, historically.

The association of private sugar mills also said around 3.5 mt of sugar is expected to be diverted towards ethanol production in current season (October-September), against 2.15 mt, in 2023-24.

Last month, ISMA had downgraded its own estimate of sugar production for the entire 2024-25 season to 26.4 mt from 27.27 mt pegged in January, citing lower cane availability in Maharashtra and Karnataka, and early closing of crushing by some mills in eastern and central regions of UP.

bullish outlook

Projecting an optimistic outlook for the 2025-26 season, ISMA said: “Benefiting from a favourable south-west monsoon in 2024, sugarcane planting for the 2025-26 season has reportedly shown notable improvement in key producing States such as Maharashtra and Karnataka. Consequently, the crushing season is anticipated to begin as per schedule in October 2025, ensuring adequate supply position.”

Further, it said that ongoing varietal replacement initiatives are delivering encouraging outcome in Uttar Pradesh and other northern States. These advancements are expected to enhance both cane yield and sugar recovery rates, thereby strengthening overall production performance in the next season, it added.
