The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has achieved a new record with over one crore tickets issued through electronic ticket machines, which was introduced in February 2024. This achievement ranks first in India under road transport.
As of April 7, a total of 1.03 crore people have obtained tickets and travelled using the electronic ticket machine. “We are delighted to inform you that this achievement ranks first in India under road transport and second under all types of transport, following the railways,” says a post by Arasu Bus, the official page of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Department, in a social media post.
Phanindra Reddy, Transport Secretary, commented on the post, “This is just the beginning of the digital revolution in Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporations.”
The public transport system in Tamil Nadu is supported by 30,881 stage carriage buses, including 28,024 buses and 2,857 minibuses. Among the stage carriages, the Government-owned eight State Transport Undertakings operate a fleet of 20,260 buses, transporting approximately 1.76 crore people daily, according to the Transport Department’s 2024-25 policy note.
