Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), in collaboration with General Consultant AEON and contractor L&T, has successfully erected the country’s first-ever 33.33 m long U-girder at Ramapuram.
This part of Phase 2, Corridor 5 (ECV-02), is from Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminal to Sholinganallur project. This landmark engineering feat is a first of its type in the history of Indian metro rail projects, says a CMRL release.
Weighing 225 tonnes, the girder marks a significant engineering achievement. Normally, in traffic junctions and U turns, steel girders are used, but in this particular location, in front of the L&T headquarters, instead of steel CMRL has tried for longer U-girder, making it the longest among Indian metros. The challenge is casting with special moulds, transportation and launching, CMRL said.
The work was executed successfully on three spans with two girders on each span. Total of 6 U-girders of 33.33 meters each were used.
The casting process involved intricate reinforcement and pre-tensioning. The massive girder was transported using 6+6 multi-axle trailers powered by a Volvo FH 520 HP puller from the casting yard to the erection site and required detailed logistical planning, the release said.
