Low-pressure area forms over Bay of Bengal, may boost monsoon further

A low-pressure area has formed over north-west Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast on Tuesday, which is likely to move slowly northwards and become more marked during next two days, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

This is expected to further rev up the monsoon, and push its coverage represented by the northern limit to beyond Mumbai, Pune, Sholapur, Kalaburagi, Mahbubnagar, Kavali, Agartala, and Goalpara, where it is stuck since yesterday.

Conditions are favourable for its further advance of into remaining parts of Karnataka; some more parts of Maharashtra and some more parts of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha over next two-three days, while announcing its arrival at some of these places.

Remaining parts North-Eastern states and some parts of West Bengal and Sikkim are also expected to be covered during this phase.

The ‘low’ will setting off isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Kerala and Mahe for next three days; fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy rainfall for next five days over same region, apart from Coastal and South Interior Karnataka.

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam and Telangana for next three days; Rayalaseema on Wednesday (tomorrow); and very heavy rainfall over Telangana for two days. Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam; Rayalaseema; and Telangana for next five days.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely for six days over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Thunder squalls with winds of 50-60 km/hr in speed and gusting to 70 km/hr are likely over South Interior Karnataka for four days; Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam and Rayalaseema for two days.
