The Ratnagiri-Malvan stretch, including Sindhudurg airport, on west Maharashtra coast, and to some extent Chiplun in adjoining interior, received heavy rain midmorning even as a fresh circulation over Bay of Bengal gains traction.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects this circulation to descend to lower levels of atmosphere to set up a fresh low-pressure area later today. It has put under watch for intensification by another round, which Myanmar Department Meteorology and Hydrology, has gone on record stating would be as a depression.
But the system may achieve do no more than light up West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya, and North-East Indian States with heavy rainfall since an incoming western disturbance and an embedded strong cyclonic circulation over North-West India could put its ambitions to rest and weaken it, thus switching off monsoon activity over mainland India.
IMD’s numerical predictions also suggest a rogue circulation showing up over Delhi and neighbourhood over next two to three days, setting off a strong gust of dry north-westerlies and headed into the Indo-Gangetic plains. A reversal of the situation leading to revival of monsoon is not seen at least until June 5.
European Cente for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) extends this lull phase by five more days until June 10, till when its ensemble model output is available. It is also given that the monsoon cannot go firing away endlessly during its onset stage unless supported on a sustained basis by engines in the form of low-pressure areas/depression.
