Tamil Nadu’s efforts to capture the ‘China plus one’ continues and this push recently took state officials to Vietnam, another key recent beneficiary of global supply chain realignment.
With an eye on growing Tamil Nadu’s footprint as a global manufacturing hub, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Industries, Investment Promotions and Commerce, TRB Rajaa, was in Vietnam last week.
As part of the road show, he is said to have met Taiwanese majors with presence in Vietnam and also Vietnam’s homegrown companies with the aim of building supply chain partners and also showcase TN’s industrial prowess to Vietnam’s industrial players.
Rajaa in a social media post termed his visit to Vietnam as ‘eye-opening’. “Visited the Hong Fu facility in Haiphong, Vietnam, a leading footwear manufacturer from Taiwan. The factory floor was buzzing with activity and had a first hand experience of the various processes involved in making a shoe. Urged them to speed up work to establish their unit in TN. They have confirmed that they have received all clearances and that the construction of their facility will commence very soon. Requested them to expand further in TN,” he said in a post on X. Hong Fu, the supplier to global majors like Nike, has already announced investments in a non-leather footwear facility in Tamil Nadu.
State sources said that electronics, green energy, and non-leather footwear have emerged as key areas of synergy between the two countries and the visit was to highlight the similarities in the ecosystem and learn more on global standards.
The minister is also said to have met Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Sandeep Arya, and discussed ways to strengthen trade and investment ties between Tamil Nadu and Vietnam. He also had meetings with officials of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce, sources said. He next heads to Singapore for a global semiconductor conference, they add.
Further, as announced earlier in the State Assembly, TN also set up a Guidance TN desk in Vietnam earlier this week as part of its global outreach measures.
“This desk of of our Investment Promotion agency Guidance TN, will connect with Vietnamese industry and promote the capabilities of TN. Soon we will establish such desks in many other countries,” Rajaa said in his announcement.
