India’s tea production was up 2 per cent during the month of March 2025 mainly on the increase in output in Assam, the largest producing State.
As per the Tea Board’s latest statistics, the all India production during March increased to 65.14 million kgs, up from 63.78 m kgs in the same period last year.
In Assam Valley, the output during March 2025 was up 33 per cent at 26.66 million kgs (20.10 m kgs in March 2024), while in Cachar it was down at 0.86 m kgs (1.35 m kg). Total output in Assam was 27.52 m kgs, up 28 per cent over corresponding previous year’s 21.45 m kg.
However, in West Bengal, the production declined by around 15 per cent to 20.51 m kg (24.12 m kg). In Dooars, the tea output declined by 19 per cent to 9.28 m kgs (11.49 m kgs), while in Darjeeling it increased marginally to 0.10 m kgs (0.08 m kg).
In North India, the tea production during March was 5.39 per cent higher than last year at 49.43 m kgs (46.90 m kg).
However, in South India, the production declined by 7 per cent to 15.71 m kg (16.88 m kg). In Tamil Nadu, the production was down by around 8 per cent at 11.01 m kg (11.95 m kg), while in Kerala the output was down by 5 per cent at 4.32 m kg (4.55 m kg). In Karnataka the production was flat at 0.38 m kg.
Production of tea by big growers was up by 6.3 per cent at 26.29 m kg, while the small growers’ output reduced marginally to 38.85 m kg (39.04 m kg). CTC tea production stood at 56.64 m kg, while the orthodox tea output was 7.73 m kg and the green tea production stood at 0.77 m kg.
During Jan-March 2025, the all India tea production stood at 107.92 m kg. This includes output of 60.44 m kg in North India and 47.48 m kg in South India.
