Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday said the government will make “short, mid and long term” plans to utilise water, earlier used to be released to Pakistan under the Indus Water Treaty, for providing irrigation facilities to Indian farmers, especially of bordering States.

Addressing the annual kharif campaign meeting where several agriculture ministers of States were present, he said keeping in abeyance of the Indus Water Treaty in 1960 is a “historic decision” in the interest of the country.

Calling this 1960 treaty with Pakistan a “historical mistake” by the then government, Chouhan said it led to maximum water being used by the neighbouring country. The minister said it was unfortunate that 80 per cent water of Indian rivers, including Indus, Chenab and Jhelum, went to Pakistan due to this treaty.

The government has already suspended the decades-old treaty following the killing of 26 people, mostly tourists, in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22.

Claiming that suspension of the treaty is in the interest of the farmers, he said bordering states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, as well as Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, will get more water for irrigation.

“If you are talking about our top priorities, then aane wale samay mein Pakistan jaane wale pani ko kaise roka ja sakta hai, uspe kaam chalu hai (work has begun on how to stop water that flows into Pakistan). I am talking about the water which is going to Pakistan, I’m not talking about breaking the Indus Treaty.”

Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, thn Jal Shakti Minister, in July 2021 had said that India had started working to check flow of surplus water going to Pakistan.

Chouhan also lauded Indian army for successful execution of “Operation Sindoor” and said that the government has resolved to eliminate terrorism from the root.
