Operation Sindoor: Flight ops at over 20 airports suspended until May 10

Flight operations to and from more than 20 airports have been suspended until May 10, 2025, after India struck terrorist sites in Pakistan early Wednesday morning.

A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued at 5:40 am on Wednesday, covering the affected Flight Information Regions (FIRs).

The airports are located across various States and Union Territories, including Jammu and Kashmir and Gujarat.

This has disrupted flight operations at airports such as Leh, Jammu, Srinagar, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Jodhpur, Shimla, and Rajkot, among others.

Air India, in a statement, said it has cancelled all flights to and from Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Chandigarh, and Rajkot until 5:29 am on May 10, “following a notification from aviation authorities regarding the closure of these airports”.

IndiGo stated that, due to a government notification, over 165 of its flights from multiple airports — including Amritsar, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Dharamshala, Gwalior, Jammu, Jodhpur, Kishangarh, Leh, Rajkot, and Srinagar — have been cancelled until 5:29 am IST on May 10, 2025.

These flight disruptions follow precision strikes carried out early Wednesday morning by the Indian Armed Forces on terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

An official communiqué issued early Wednesday morning stated that the forces had launched “Operation Sindoor”, targeting nine sites where terrorist attacks against India were being planned and directed.

“Our actions have been focused, measured, and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in the selection of targets and the method of execution,” the communiqué said.

“These steps come in the wake of the barbaric Pahalgam terrorist attack, in which 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were murdered.”

Following the attack, India’s top political brass has granted the armed forces “complete operational freedom” to determine the mode, targets, and timing of the country’s response.

Moreover, the strikes were carried out two weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack. They coincided with the day nationwide civil defence mock drills were scheduled to take place.

“Given the current tense situation between India and Pakistan, we now roll into a hostile, ‘trigger-happy’ airspace environment. All aircraft — commercial, civil, private, and cargo helicopters — planning flights near the FIR boundary are cautioned to restrict operations, as the chances of being mistaken for enemy aircraft by air defence systems are extremely high,” aviation expert Mark D. Martin of Martin Consulting told businessline.

“In the past, we have seen two such major events: the shooting down of an Azerbaijan Airlines ERJ-170 and Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over Ukraine in 2014.”

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
